Klandis restarted!

Thu Nov 12, 2009, 12:22 AM
My game project has been officially restarted. I am looking for people to help me on the project, no skills are required just willingness to commit some time. So here is the break down.

Currently:
I am rapidly converting the game engine and game editor to run in Java. There are many numerous benefits to this, not the least of which is the pretty windows and user interface that I can now make for it (I have posted a picture). It looks like I haven't done much, but there is a heck of a lot that is done, but not yet included/visible. Also i am making rapid progress, so it shouldn't take me too long.

Changes:
I am no longer using the angled isometric orientation, i have rotated the camera 45 degrees so that u now have a front, back, left and right view. Otherwise its the same, the camera is just orientated differently. Again the menus and stuff will look very different with the use of the Java interface, and the new pretty windows.

Criticism:
I want criticism as long as it is constructive. Don't tell me "your game sucks, I am not going to play it", but rather say something like "I don't like this aspect, it would be better in my opinion if you did it like this".

Planning:
I currently have a vision, but no long term detailed plan. At this early stage of development nothing is set in stone, anything can be changed. I need help with ideas, criticism of troubled areas, and planning for the project.

Future additions:
This is what got me motivated to start up the project again. There are two new ideas i want to implement into the game. I already know how to do both of them and its not that hard to do them, but i need to finish more of the conversion to Java first. The first idea involves making the world (towns, dungeons...) grow and change dynamically. It would also allow me to spawn completely random worlds. What this means is that the game will be different every time it is played, and it will change based on the players actions. For example fail to defend a town and it will be destroyed, or spend a lot of time in a town investing in the economy by buying stuff, doing quests etc and it will eventually grow into a powerful town offering some of the strongest weapons and spells in the game. The second idea involves the dynamic destruction of buildings. It links the destruction of one part of the building to other parts. I want the game to end up looking more like a playable anime, where buildings are routinely demolished by powerful characters.

Current innovations:
Here i will discuss some of the key aspects already present in the original game, some of which will be unique to this game, the others will be rarely seen in similar games. First, the world itself supports multiple floors, the camera can be rotated to show 4 different views, and anything can be animated. Second the world can change dynamically because it is build out of objects that serve as building blocks (think Lego). You can destroy anything, or an object can transform into a different object because of a spell or attack. For example attacking a wall could transform it into a cracked wall, or hit a tree with a fireball and it will become a burned tree. Not only can things be removed (destroyed) or changed, they can be added. Cast a spell and summon a wall of stone to block an enemy, or summon clouds to walk on. Another idea is a special type of magic that allows animation of objects. Animate a suitable object such as a suit of armor and it comes to life under your control. There may be more, but this is all i can currently think of.

Recruiting:
I really need help on the project. What I need is for people to step up and take charge, helping with planning and technical aspects especially. What i need help with (In order of importance):
Game design/Planning - no experience needed. Strong committed.
Art - Requires some art skills. Some commitment.
Programming - I think i can handle the programming on my own, but I wouldn't mind having some help, especially when i get stuck. Having only started learning Java a year ago, I am far from an expert.

writing journal entries:
I actually find this task very annoying and difficult, so much info I want to convey and don't know how to do it.

  • Watching: Family guy
  • Playing: Majesty 2, Unreal 2004
